Connecting iWork and Dropbox

April 14th, 2011

This just came out in the ProfHacker column in the Chronicle. Dropbox is now accessible to iWork applications (Pages, Keynote, Numbers). It does work slightly differently than the usual link to Dropbox, so do be aware that with this approach, your information stays on your iPad until you send it to dropbox again via WebDav, and it only COPIES to Dropbox, so you’ll end up with multiple copies of a file in Dropbox. But it is a way to get to Dropbox from iWork apps.

Drop Dav no longer provides a free service and is now very expensive. thus, this option is no longer desirable for most user. I hope someone comes up with an affordable alternative

It will be interested to see how iCloud, once fully realized, will affect Dropbox usage. It will take a lot to pry me from my Dropbox account, but if iCloud is seamlessly integrated into all apps, well, the principle of least effort may end up being a problem for Dropbox.
